Franz Karl Zimplemann, aged sixteen and a Scharführer in the HJ, is new to Berlin, his family just settling from a recent move from the quiet Bavarian town of Wolfratshausen. His father, Sigfried, was promoted to a higher postilion, which resulted in a move from his boyhood home to IG Farben's Berlin site. Franz's mother Else hoped that the city would give her son better opportunities than being an office worker, as well as draw him from his shell. Franz is somewhat overwhelmed with the city still, but oddly eager to look about and explore it.
